Changelog

What's new

Coena updates itself: the installed app picks up a new version the next time you open it, never in the middle of cooking.

  1. Coena 2: the planner

Coena becomes a product anyone can use, with an AI planner at the center.

    • The AI planner: ask for a week of dinners, a budget or a way to use up the spinach, and approve the plan and list it proposes.
    • My stores: pick the grocery stores you shop at and see prices per item, per store and for the week.
    • Reminders and notifications: thaw the night before, start cooking, shopping day, use it up — in the app, as push notifications and by email.
    • Import from more apps: Mela, Crouton, Recipe Keeper, MasterCook, Plan to Eat, Mealie, Tandoor, Cooklang and more.
    • Import from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest links: the recipe in the description or caption, or the page it links to.
    • Open sign-up: anyone can create a kitchen; invites still bring people into yours.
    • Turn off AI: one switch in Settings hides the planner and every AI feature, for you only. Everything else keeps working.
    • Cook a meal: cook several recipes at once and Coena tells you what to do next, so everything is ready together. Split screen on tablets, a second phone can help.
    • My kitchen: a pegboard of your tools and appliances. Recipes show what they need and warn when your slow cooker is too small.
    • Email recipes to your own private Coena address.
    • Your own prices: note what you paid, or snap a receipt, and see “your last price” on the list — for any store, even ones with no price feed. The plan shows planned vs. spent.
    • Nutrition from ingredients, using USDA data: a nutrition label for any recipe, daily goals and day totals on the plan.
    • Works offline: the shopping list, this week's plan and your recipes open without a signal, and items you check off sync when you're back.
    • Calendar feed for Google or Apple Calendar, Siri Shortcuts (What's for dinner?, add to the list), reusable menus, leftovers that scale the original, and a kitchen display for a wall tablet.
    • Export everything — Paprika format, web pages, Markdown or JSON — always free. Plus weekly backups by email, version history with restore, and finding and merging duplicates.
    • Nested binders, advanced search with include and exclude, and saved searches as smart binders.
    • Print layouts (full page, two columns, index cards), bigger text, bold, italic and links in steps, recipes that link to each other, and sending a recipe as a file.
    • Scan recipes of up to six pages, or fill one in by hand from pasted text — no AI needed.
    • Shopping: move or copy items between lists, search the list, keep an item exactly as typed, and barcode scanning. The pantry check now counts amounts and expiry dates.
    • Import reports and a check that flags a recipe that came in incomplete; What's new and a way to message us in Settings › Help.
    • A new home at app.coena.app, and a website at coena.app. Old links redirect.
  2. Faster with big libraries, safer connections

A review round across the app before opening it up.

    • Libraries of thousands of recipes scroll smoothly; Today, the planner and the shopping side panel load only the recipes they show.
    • Claude can only connect through Claude's own sign-in callbacks, and Coena's sign-in endpoints are rate limited.
    • Longer invite codes, and resetting a member's password also signs out their API tokens and Claude connections.
    • Paprika imports show which recipes you already have before importing.
    • App updates install in the background and switch over when you're not cooking or editing.
  3. Coena 1.0

The first release: a recipe box, planner, shopping list and pantry for one household, with a Claude connector.

    • Recipe library with instant search, filters, binders, trash and undo.
    • Recipe pages with scaling in real fractions, US ↔ metric, tappable timers and a cook log.
    • Cook mode: one step at a time, with swipe, keyboard and voice control.
    • Meal planner: a week board with drag and drop, a month view, and “Shop for this week”.
    • Shopping lists grouped by aisle that merge amounts and sync in real time, with a store mode.
    • Pantry by location with expiry dates, and “What can I make?”.
    • Import from websites, pasted text, photos and Paprika; AI photos for recipes without one.
    • The Claude connector, personal API tokens, an iOS Shortcut, a bookmarklet and the Android share sheet.

Dinner, sorted.
