Recipes and cook mode

Your recipes, readable from across the kitchen.

Everything you cook, in one library your household shares — clean, searchable and scaled to however many people are coming. Then a cook mode built for messy hands.

A recipe page with ingredients, scaling and steps

The library

Find any recipe in a keystroke.

Search titles, ingredients, tags and cuisines as you type. Filter by course, cuisine, rating, time, favorites or “never cooked”; sort by anything; switch between a photo grid, a list and a compact view. Libraries of thousands of recipes stay fast.

  • Bulk actions: file in binders or trash many at once, with undo
  • A trash that keeps deleted recipes until you empty it
  • ⌘K to jump to any recipe, binder or action

Binders

Binders, like the ones on your shelf.

Make collections for the way you actually cook — Weeknight, Holidays, Grandma's, Things to try — each with a color, an emoji and course dividers inside. A recipe can live in as many binders as you like.

My kitchen

Recipes that fit the tools you own.

Hang your tools on a pegboard — the Dutch oven, the blender, the scale — and Coena shows the equipment every recipe needs and what you're missing. One filter keeps the library to what you can make with your kitchen.

  • Every tool drawn with its own illustration; missing ones greyed out
  • Each recipe lists the equipment it needs
  • “Can make with my tools” as a library filter
My kitchen · 6 tools Example

Can make with my tools Rosemary focaccia needs a sheet pan and a scale — you have both.

Cook mode: one step at a time in large type with its ingredients and timers

Cook a meal

Three dishes. One serve time. No panic.

Pick the recipes for dinner and when you want to eat. Coena schedules every step backwards from that time, fits the hands-on work into the oven and simmer gaps, and coaches you through it: what to do now, what's next, and what you're waiting on.

  • A big NOW / NEXT coach you can read from across the kitchen
  • “Waiting on” shows what's in the oven or on the stove, and how long is left
  • Split screen on a tablet or laptop: the coach beside the full plan
Sunday dinner · serve at 7:00 pm Example
Now · 6:12 pm Sear the chicken thighs, skin side down Lemon-garlic chicken · step 3 of 5 5:40 left

  • Rosemary focaccia
  • Lemon-garlic chicken
  • Summer panzanella
An example schedule: focaccia, lemon-garlic chicken and a panzanella, planned backwards from a 7:00 pm serve time. The coach shows what to do now (sear the chicken, 5 minutes 40 seconds left), what's next at 6:20 (prepare the panzanella) and what you're waiting on (focaccia in the oven, 12 minutes).

Writing recipes

Type it the way you'd write it.

Write “2 Tbsp olive oil, divided” or “1 (14 oz) can tomatoes” and Coena understands the amount, the unit and the ingredient as you type — so scaling, shopping and pantry matching just work. Headings like “For the sauce:” become sections.

  • Times, servings, cuisine, course and tags
  • Notes and nutrition
  • Your own photo, or a generated one
